The simple hydrodynamic theory of high-velocity penetration is not sufficient to predict the terminal ballistic resistance of steel/glass laminated targets against shaped charges. In order to obtain a better understanding of the physical mechanisms that occur during the jet penetration process, a series of shots against targets with glass layers of different intermediate thicknesses at different standoffs were carried out. A transformation function could be derived to bring experimental and calculated penetration data into line. This function characterizes all the penetration reducing or enhancing processes. The range of jet velocities and targets, in which the different physical mechanisms are dominant, is presented and discussed.
