Titel
Stabilized Ammonium Nitrate for Applications in Gas Generators

Stabilisiertes Ammoniumnitrat für die Anwendung in Gasgeneratoren
Abstract
Ammonium nitrate can be used as oxidizer in gas generator systems, when the difficulties caused by its polymorphism are overcome. This can be reached by using absolutely dry ammonium nitrate or by incorporating diammine complexes of copper or zinc into the ammonium nitrate lattice according to a concept developed at ICT. The materials were investigated with temperature resolved X-ray diffraction for an unambiguous determination of their phase properties. The measurements reveal that under these conditions phase III, which is responsible for the difficulties, does not occur. Especially with metal contents bigger than 6 wt. % no disturbing phase transitions are observed in the range from -70 to more than 100 degree Celsius. After atomizing from the melt the materials are available as spherical particles in 2 standard qualities with mean particle sizes of 50-60 and 160 mym in quantities of metric tons.
