Abstract
Prerequisite for effective operation of CIM-systems is interactive computer-assisted process planning including off-line programming of production cells. The practicability of this approach is crucial in the field of assembly, due to the technological breadth and the variety of processes in addition to the problem of component and device tolerances. The use of CAE tools, like FEA, for simulating assembly processes is discussed based on the example of the screw driving process. Furthermore the problems and possibilities of an off-line-programming of assembly procedures for industrial robots are discussed, particularly arising from changing payloads applied.
