Ten Wistar Kyoto rats were fed an atherogenic diet (Altromin, C 1061) from birth. Anatomical observations showed that this diet led to calcification of blood vessels. Feeding this diet up to 1,5 years did not change blood pressure (tailcuff method), nor heart rate. PG1 had no significant effects on diameters of capillaries, however red blood cell velocity increased, thus improving skin perfusion up to 24 per cent. It is concluded that in rats chronically fed an atherogenic diet, the threshold value for a response to PGE1 injections is much lower compared to rats fed a normal diet.
