Abstract
The general image of a robot originates from its understanding as an automatic machine with more or less humanlike appearance which is capable to execute limited manual functions of humans. In contrary, the first generation of industrial robots (IR) has been developed from simple manipulators, stil looking alike, and had very restricted functional capabilities due to lacking technology. The further development resulted in technological, ergonomic, safety and thus functional improvements, which made the IR to one of the most efficient and flexible tool in modern manufacturing processes. Future developments in robotics will affect much more people and impair their working but also their living environments. The challenge of designing robots according to men's needs and habits will very much determine the success of robot manufacturing companies.
