Abstract
The recycling of chipboard and chipboard-based products can be considered the state of the art. With the WKI process for the recovery of chipboard chips can also be used to break up MDF and hence recover the fibres compressed in MDF products. MDF fibres form a smaller morphological unit than chipboard chips. In fact, this is the main difference between chipboard and MDF. With both materials using the same binding agents and board thicknesses, their break up conditions are otherwise practically identical. This also means, however, that the same restrictions apply to MDF as to chipboard, i.e. boards bonded with PMDI, phenolic resins and melamine resins cannot be broken up.
