The scientific and engineering work at the IzfP concentrates on new procedures for NDT of different kinds of materials, components and industrial equipments. For the utilization of gained scientific reimperative to design and construct instruments and apparatus in our institute. Furthermore, it is necessary to design, develop, fabricate and machine electronic and mechanical devices and components properly either in the institute or in close cooperation with industry. For this purpose the IzfP is equiped with numerous design and development aids, and with sophisticated electronical and mechanical instruments and machines. Industrial applications of modern NDT procedures require not only the proper interpretation of NDT results but of the same importance is the reliability and the operation of the applied apparatus and the protection of the instruments in the industrial environment. In this paper we discuss the demands on NDT apparatus from the industrial point of view. Two newly develop ed and constructed instruments for NDT by ultrasonic testing (UT) are used as examples for a design which meets the requirements for use in rough industrial environment, e.g. in nuclear power plants, steel factories, petrochemistry etc. The described apparatus are (1) the continuously steerable phased array system PAG-3 and (2) the UT-system ALOK-3 which detects amplitude and time-of flight data from ultrasonic data in realtime. Both instruments were designed in close cooperation with different industrial users.
