Virtual worlds, in their quest for easy-perceptable illusions, can benefit tremendously from integrated acoustic sensations. Sounds help significantly to increase the degree of immersion for human users. The virtual reality toolkit of IGD enables designers of virtual worlds to apply a broad range of acoustic features combined and synchronized with standard visual and interaction system components. The worlds are defined by a single audiovisual scene database, which can be created and manipulated by standard modelers. Applicable acoustic features are sound events, direct propagation of sound, averaged statistical characteristics of a scene and room acoustical simulations. The features are demonstrated in a video and can be self-experienced at IGD's virtual reality demo centre in Darmstadt, Germany.
