Titel
Perceptual audio coding
Abstract
Low bit-rate coding of high quality digital audio is currently introduced to many applications. Systems based on low bit-rate coding are used for storage purposes (both consumer and professional), ISDN, audio transmissions and will be used soon for Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and the sound part of digital video services. this paper intends to give an overview of the basic technology of perceptual audio coding. The single most important point is the use of psychoacoustics to use the masking effects within the human auditory system to control the audibility of quantization noise. The fundamental principles of subband and transform coding are described. The new ISO/MPEG-Audio standard is described in detail.
