Abstract
In general, ultrasonic sound wave propagation through austerlitic (stainless steel) weld material cannot be predicted because of the anisotropic and inhomogeneous structure of the weld. To support NDT inspections, a ray tracing algorithm was developed to follow longitudinal, horizontal and vertical polarized shear wave propagation from the base material through the cladding in three dimensions. The algorithm was implemented in the "3D-Ray-SAFT" software package that allows experimental modelling, to visualize the rays in three-dimensions and to include reflections from arbitrarily placed flaws. The presented algorithm results that were experimentally validated are compared to similar, existing algorithms.
