Abstract
An optical sensor (1) is used for the selective, if necessary, detection of a substance component within a liquid or gaseous medium. It has an integrated optical setup comprising an optical waveguide. A mode within the waveguide is excitable by means of a prism (4) by injecting light and the reflection can be detected by means of a measuring facility (11). The waveguide is a waveguide layer (7) which changes its refractive characteristics, for example, under environmental influences. Said layer is located on a surface (5) of the prism (4) and its side facing away from the prism forms a contact surface (14) for the substance to be investigated. A semi-transparent intermediate layer (6) is provided for the purpose of partial reflection between the prism surfaces facing the waveguide layer (7) and the waveguide layer. The optical sensor (1) has a simple design through the use of a prism to inject the light beam in the waveguide and has a high measuring sensitivity (Figure 1).
