A new quality of testing for automated ultrasonic inspections
Abstract
Non-destructive testing of safety relevant components by ultrasound, e.g. primary circuit components in nuclear power plants, is according to the state of the art performed by automated systems. Automation improves the safety of the inspection procedures abd the reliability of the inspection result avoiding to a large extent human activities that are not documented and supervised: this is achieved through a testing technique, signal processing, and documentation that is improved compared to manual testing. In order to validate the integrity of a component, the results of NDT have to be judged using fracture mechanical calculations. Therefore quantitative results are required, comprising the knowledge of size and type of a defect and of its behaviour during plant operation when inservice inspections are performed. An important pre-requisite of quantitative NDT is the realization of an evaluable inspection safety, including above all the reliability of the applied inspection technique. T his is demonstrated within the scope of quality assurance to be able to guarantee a high probability of defect detection. The given examples are in main related to the automated ultrasonic inspection systems ALOK (Amplitude-and-Time-of-Flight Locus Curves) and SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) however the results of the investigations may be transferred to any other system.
