Abstract
The subject of this project, initiated by the Krupp Uhde GmbH and processed by the Fraunhofer UMSICHT institute, was the theoretical and experimentical analysis of the flue gas valve used in a coking plant. The major aim was to reduce the pressure drop of the valve without modifying the outer geometry. A half-scale model of the valve was built in order to characterize the internal flow by pressure measurements. In addition, a Fluent/UNS simulation of the flow in the valve model was performed. A comparison of the results showed good agreement. Next, the fluid flow in the original geometry under realistic operating conditions was simulated. The results confirmed the theoretical scale-up to the 1:2 model. The confidence gained in the simulation results encouraged calculations with constructive variations of the geometry. A modification suggested by Fraunhofer UMSICHT reduced the pressure drop to 10% of the original value.
