Abstract
In the study described here evaluation criteria for man-machine systems in vehicles were extracted from literature which concern traffic safety. The criteria selected were weighted according to the extent of their impact on traffic safety. They were compiled in the form of a checklist with every criterion formulated as a decision question. With the MMI-Checklist (checklist for ManMachine Interaction) an assessment method was developed and implemented as a computer program tool. This tool supports the evaluator of a manmachine system in a vehicle to find out whether the driver's interaction with the device may impair traffic safety. The checklist criteria available and relevant for the man-machine system regarded, are specified utilizing the knowledge base of the MMI-Checklist. Whether a checklist criterion is relevant for a dedicated device may depend, e.g., on the device type (e.g., a warning system) or on the type of system output (e.g., optical). The program tool was implemented wit h the programming language Java which makes it independent from a specific computer platform.
