Medizinmanipulatoren - Breakthrough with Virtual Reality
Abstract
A new concept for minimally invasive surgery has been presented comprising articulated endoscopes and instruments, an advanced man-machine interface and a manipulator system for transferring the input commands to the instruments. First evaluations have already shown that this concept can make the control of surgical instruments and endoscopes more intuitive and ergonomically acceptable. Based on these evaluations the question of whether medical manipulators can be of benefit to minimally invasive surgery should be answered with yes. The next steps envisaged are more detailed evaluations using the virtual reality simulation environment. These will certainly lead to further optimisations in the design of the manipulator and the overall layout of the components. Also, attention will be given to the need for some form of force-feedback.
