Laser based technologies for cutting and welding processes are well established now in the industrial practice. The technique of surface modification by laser induced solid phase hardening has turned out successful in special industrial applications, and its use is spreading now. In principle, the modification of the surface region by coating or cladding is even more promising for adaption of the material to the special service conditions. Intense investigations are under way in order to overcome the scientific, technological and economical problems which, up to now, still restrict their widespread application. The various methods for laser assisted chemical modification of the surface (alloying, dispersing) and for the laser based deposition (cladding, coating by vapour deposition) are critically discussed with respect to their state of the art, their problems and their potential. They are exemplyfied by own results concerning the production of wear and corrosion resistant surface mod ifications by pulsed and cw COsub2 lasers.
