Abstract
A z-pinch device is used as a plasma target for the heavy on beam of the UNILAC stripper region at the GSI (1). The aim is the investigation of the interaction of fast heavy ions with hot matter in terms energy loss and carge state measurements. The essential plasma parameters of the Z-pinch target are the electron density and the plasma temperature. They are measured with the following methods: - time resolved optical spectroscopy of the light emitted by the hydrogen plasma - holographic interferometry in transverse direction (with respect to the symmetry axis of the plasma pinch) - time resolved Mach-Zehnder interferometry in axial direction.
