Abstract
The growthccurve for particleboard in the Federal Republic of Germany shows the typical course for new products: an initially slow and then rapidly increasing course, which flattens at a relatively high level. For particleboards the period of surprising developments is apparently over. Four decades ago particleoboard was first introduced into furniture industry as an engineering material. As a consequence, industrially organized plants were able to develop from small workshops. Quality specifications substantially contributed towards modern particleboard quality. The question is whether in the trend towards European harmonizing, one or the other test-standard could be better adapted to the real demands on particleboards. For the currently used resin-bonded particleboard optimization and adaptation are the governing factors in material research. In the future development requirements lie in the field of process engineering. Despite all discussions about environmental pollutants, particleboard has proved an indispensable product, and has managed to remain the number 1 of all board-type products.
