An integrated library system for the libraries in the Fraunhofer-Society
Abstract
The research libraries of the Fraunhofer-Institutes are among others characterized by the decentral structure of the Fraunhofer-Society (FhG) and the specialization of the institutes in different fields. In 1986 FhG library commission constituted a working group on data processing to meet the growing demands of information acquisition, management and retrieval and to coordinate the selection of a library system. The members of the group were librarians, documentalists, scientists and data processing specialists. A list of demands on a library system was developed. Based on this list available systems were examined and weighted. As a result of this comprehensive comparision the data processing group recommended to buy the library management system TINlib in all Fraunhofer-Institutes. A FhG-internal project was extended to give help for installation, training, support, and maintenance. Translation into German, further development, training, exchange of experience, and advice for using TI Nlib given by a librarian took place in close cooperation with the institutes. The system is now successfully used in 16 institutes. By extending the coverage of their services the libraries are enabled to develop into information centre and thus will be able to meet future demands.
