A hierarchical model for evolution and life is the basic concept for a new generation of industrial controls and manufacturing organisation. This contribution introduces in the historical background and explains the nature of the new technology. Interrelations to traditional and modern approaches to the problem of complexity and change in manufacturing are displayed and the perspective of Holonic Manufacturing Systems as a response to the needs in production in the next century are described. A report on the IMS (Intelligent Manufacturing Systems) Test Case 5 which prepares a large scale international Research & Development project on HMS covers the technical and organisational aspects as well as the experiences and results.
