In the past decade we have witnessed an explosive growth of applications of microelectronics in automobiles. Microelectronic devices have found their way into almost any nook and cranny of modern automobiles, they control the cleanliness and efficiency of fuel combustion, display information on the dashboard and let powered windows move smoothly and safely. While fulfilling these roles they are subjected to severe environmental stresses, such as wide temperature variations, chemically aggressive liquids and vapors, shocks and vibrations, electrical and electromagnetic disturbances. Most of these problems can be overcome by careful placement and packaging of the device, but the latter two must be addressed by the design of the electronic subsystem. The importance of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of an electronic subsystem with the automobile's electrical system as well as with other electronic subsystems will increase as mechanical controls are substituted and augmented by electro nic devices and new applications in the areas of communication, navigation, safety and automation arise.
