Abstract
Organizations today are expanding far beyond their traditional geographical boundaries in the search for new markets and improved organizational viabilty. In this context, telecooperation systems have become an essential component, facilitating the joint work of geographically distributed persons or groups. Typical components of telecooperation-systems are video conferencing, application sharing, shared whiteboards, and data transfer. The introduction of telecooperation systems and their use in the everyday work of an organisation has to be planned very carefully with respect to organisational, ergonomical and technical aspects. From the technological point of view, four criteria can be identified that characterise the features of successful telecooperation systems: Completeness (refers to the support of all three essential aspects of group work: commnunication, collaboration and coordination), Integration into the existing technical environment (database systems, document archives and further information sources, Interoperability between different network technologies, compression standards, hardware platforms and data formats, Quality of communication and collaboration service within a telecooperation system must be tailored to the requirements of the application domain.
