Abstract
A light weight CFRP/titanium fan blade is being investigated by MTU. An overview of the analytical and experimental investigations is given regarding bird strike resistance and fatigue life of the blade root CFRP/metal joint. With 42 CFRP/titanium lap-joint specimens the fatigue life curves for load-controlled tensile loading, load-controlled bending loading and for fully reversed stroke-controlled bending loading were measured. Shooting tests of bird substitute masses on single nonrotating blades were performed simulating a typical bird strike situation at take off operating condition.
