Quantitative estimation of the relative importance of each mechanism of pesticide movement from target to non-target ecosystems offers the possibilities both of defining the risks of pesticide contamination and of targeting management measures to minimise this risk. It is neither possible nor desirable to measure all the possible combinations, so the use of a mechanistic mathematical or an evaluative expert model is required to establish the magnitude of transfers between ecosystems; the values must always be based on the experimental data available. It is suggested that one way of integrating the many pesticide movement studies into a single usable system is to establish a classification system, based on the characteristics of the pesticide. and typical cultivation, soil, and meteorological scenarios to establish the maximum initial concentrations (PIEC) in the non-target ecosystem.
