In this paper various methods for reducing the heating energy consumption and two types of daylighting systems will be presented. These methods were applied as part of a research project conducted in the students living quarters in Stuttgart-Hohenheim. The six buildings comprising a complex near Hohenheim University are oriented north-south. In order to improve the thermal insulation the buildings were covered by earth mounds on the north side (U-value 0.35 W/qmK) and plants were grown on the roof. The large window areas towards the south function as solar collectors; the energy gained can be stored by suitable materials in the floor and in the walls. Four of the buildings are four storeys high, two others are three storeys high. The buildings were fitted out with different energy saving components, allowing interesting possibilities for comparison. A comprehensive measurement and regulating programme provides information on the efficiency of the measures. This has been assisted by a s ociological-empirical programme with questionnairs and interviews carried out by the Fraunhofer-Institut fuer Systemtechnik and Innovationsforschung.
