Abstract

Practically any particle board used in furniture manufacture is bound by means of urea formaldehyde glue. Subsequent formaldehyde emission of particle boards glued that way can be transmitted to the furniture manufactured by means of them. Examinations of complaints have shown that furniture can cause annoyance through formaldehyde. Most furniture manufactured, however, show no annoying emission. Therefore, in the cases of the furniture complained about theremust be defects in material and/or manufacture that favour an emission of formaldehyde. From this fact, however, it must not be concluded that on principle boards free from formaldehyde must be used. In most cases emission of formaldehyde becomes insignificant already through coatings. However, narrow faces (edges) have a specific emission of formaldehyde that is 3,5 to 5 times higher which fact is to be considered especially in furniture manufacture. For furniture manufacture particle boards are recommended the perforator data of which are not higher than 60 mg/100 g absolutelly dry. Furniture with complete coatings can be manufactured by means of particle boards of emission class E.3. For all other furniture on principle types of particle boards should be used that have less formaldehyde. Today, the forniture manufacturer has testing methods at his disposal by means of which he can control the manufacture of his products with proper use of formaldehyde.
