Detection limits of 0.01 mg or respectively 0.1 mg Dithiol/l extract solution could be achieved by means of the GC and HPLC methods, previously perfected in detail. These investigations showed that Dithiol is practically completely decomposed in aqueous foodstuffs. The speed of decomposition of Dithiol is strongly dependent on the nature and concentration of the ions present in the system. In dry and fat containing foodstuffs practically no decomposition of Dithiol occurs. As only small amounts of Dithiol are used in paper manufacture and since it rapidly decomposes in the presence of water, possible migration of Dithiol from paper into foodstuffs is unlikely to be of importance.
