At present x-ray diffraction is, though slow, the preferred method for residual stress analyses on components if the access for the portable goniometer is possible. Ultrasonic methods are, especially the birefringence method using polarized shear waves, developed for stress analysis in railroad wheels. Reliable and portable instruments are available. Micromagnetic, i.e., magnetoelastic techniques show potentially the highest sensitivity for stress analyses of the most critical residual stresses, i.e., the tangential stresses in the sufrace and in near surface zones. The multiple parameter approaches and PC-based systems offer potential for residual stress measurements in production processes and predictive maintenance strategies.
