Abstract
The assessment of service durability of components becomes more and more important in different technical areas like vehicle (automotive, railway), aeronautics, transportation, energy production, heavy machinery and maritime technology with regard to the increasing trend towards light-weight constructions and greater demands concerning costs, reduction of time-to-market periods, product safety and liability. In order to fulfil these demands different but interacting methods of fatigue design have to be applied for an effective development and proof-out of the products. In this survey the principles and methods of variable amplitude fatigue design and testing will be addressed with regard to the past, presence and future.
