Abstract
DE 102007042494 A1 UPAB: 20090428 NOVELTY - The metal fibers comprise a eutectic aluminum-based alloy. They are bonded together by liquid-phase sintering. At least 50% of aluminum is present in the alloy, with in addition, one or more of: copper, zinc, tin, manganese, beryllium, magnesium and silicon. Orientated properties of the component differ by at least 50% from each other. The metal fiber diameters are in the range 20-500 mu m. A porosity of 50% to 97% is achieved. Pore sizes lie in the range 5-1000 mu m. The specific surface area is in the range 2500-50000 m2/m3. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The fibers are orientated predominantly in a single plane, in a multilayered configuration. The sintered metal fiber component, is bonded to another component by liquid-phase sintering. The latter component is metallic and non-porous. The porous component takes the form of a panel, a profile or a hollow cylinder. The porous component is sandwiched between two plates, or arranged within a hollow cylinder. The components are made from aluminum or an aluminum alloy. USE - A component with open-cell pores and anisotropic properties, used e.g. as a lightweight structural component or heat exchanger (claimed). ADVANTAGE - Use of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, allows sintering at comparatively low temperatures, saving cost in comparison with earlier processes. Using a eutectic aluminum alloy, liquid phase sintering forms an integrally-bonded component. Suitable alloys allow sintering at temperatures 50 K or more below the melting point of pure aluminum. Desired anisotropic properties are achieved reproducibly. The porous, fibrous regions may be intentionally localized. In addition to orientated pressure loss properties, thermal conductivity properties are also orientated. Two practical manufacturing examples are included.
