Abstract
Within the information-processing concepts in a collaboration environment, CAD technology has been assigned the role of an "engineering backbone". In the CAD process, the essential geometrical as well as technological information is created and organized. CAD technology (e. g. reverse engineering) has been improved every year to perform a fast and continuous information flow throughout the stages of product development.
However, the very early stages of product development where both the aesthetic design of the product and its functionally-oriented conception are developed have not been integrated up to now. The creative process of these stages is essentially characterized by physical and virtual models which are carriers of information within the consecutive stages of development but are not developed completely as far as the CAD models are concerned - hand-drawn sketches, hand-made form models, computer animations, etc.
By means of two examples, this paper demonstrates how to integrate these design models into the process chain: Paper sketch -> Virtual sketch -> CAD model <- wireframe model <- digitized form model. The described modeling strategies focus on the "fuzziness" of the geometrical description and represent a new dimension of product modeling. This forms the basis for enhancing product development process strategies by using hybrid design models.
