In this contribution, the finite element method is used to investigate the deformation mechanisms in- and the macroscopic response of an assembly comprised of elasto-plastic spherical granules. Macroscopic yield surfaces after uniaxial closed-die compression are computed using volume averages of the appropriate stress and strain measures in a representative volume element along with periodic boundary conditions. The resulting yield surfaces are shown to deviate significantly from those underlying the isotropic elasto-plastic material models typically used for the simulation of powder compaction.
