Ultrasonic assisted diamond turning of hardened steel with mono-crystalline diamond
Abstract
Ultra-precision machining with mono-crystalline diamonds is limited to non-ferrous, a few crystalline and plastic materials. The development of a vibration assisted machining tool at the Fraunhofer IPT enables this technology to machine ferrous materials, as for example steel. This paper describes the newest developments concerning ultrasonic assisted diamond turning and will focus on the process using 40 kHz and 60 kHz. Main focus will lie on the achievable surface roughness and on the tool wear. The ultrasonic assisted turning technology works with a fixed transducer. On top of the mounted sonotrode and booster system a mono-crystalline diamond tool tip is clamped. The investigations show that the conventional parameters like feed rate lead to similar results compared to conventional ultra-precision machining. However the used frequency is a main factor regarding the achievable surface qualities. By increasing the frequency, the generated surfaces are much better and the cutting process gets more stable. Further investigations using 60 kHz and even higher frequencies will be undertaken in the future.
