Improved cutting materials, expanding knowledge of cutting technology and systematic research and development of machine elements have led to higher machining rates in recent years. One of the premises of high spindle speed was the development of suitable bearing systems with rolling contact. For the design of main spindle bearings three shapes are favoured: tandem-o, tandem-o-tandem supported by a stiff enclosure (from closure) and unfixed bearing systems with an elastic support (force closure).
