Abstract
RCE, the "Reconfigurable Computing Environment", is a service oriented software infrastructure to manage collaborative engineering processes. It hides the complexity of heterogeneous and distributed IT systems behind common user interfaces. RCE enforces security in the access of data and services. RCE is application independent and can easily be adapted to different application domains. German ship building industries around two ship yards build the Ship Design and Simulation System SESIS on top of RCE. RCE is developed in joint effort of the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI in Sankt Augustin and the German Aerospace Center DLR in Cologne.
