Abstract
(A1) Membran-Elektroden-Einheit (MEA) mit einer Anode die mindestens zwei nicht miteinander legierte katalytisch aktive Metalle enthaelt, worin mindestens ein erstes katalytisch aktives Metall (A) Ethanol oxidiert und mindestens ein zweites katalytisch aktives Metall (B) Acetaldehyd oxidiert.

The components are alloy, and are carried. The weight ratio of the metal portion between the components is 3:1 to 1:3. The electrode comprises ionomer of 30-50 wt.%. A first catalytically active metal and/or alloy as component (A) oxidizes ethanol and/or 3-10 carbon-containing alcohol to acetaldehyde and/or 3-10 carbon-containing aldehyde. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The electrode useful as anode in a membrane-electrode-unit for direct ethanol fuel cell, comprises two catalytically active components (A, B) alloyed with one another and/or in the electrode, a carbon carrier, and pore-forming agents. The components are alloy, and are carried. The weight ratio of the metal portion between the components is 3:1 to 1:3. The electrode comprises ionomer of 30-50 wt.%. A first catalytically active metal and/or alloy as component (A) oxidizes ethanol and/or 3-10 carbon-containing alcohol to acetaldehyde and/or 3-10 carbon-containing aldehyde. A second catalytically active metal and/or alloy as the component (B) oxidizes acetaldehyde, 3-10 carbon-containing aldehyde, acetic acid and/or 2-9 carbon-containing carboxylic acid to carbon dioxide. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) production of electrode; and (2) production of membrane-electrode-unit. USE - Electrode useful as anode in a membrane-electrode-unit for direct ethanol fuel cell (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The electrode ensures higher power densities to the membrane-electrode-unit.
