Abstract
DE 102007031526 A1 UPAB: 20090307 NOVELTY - The electrode useful as anode in a membrane-electrode-unit for direct ethanol fuel cell, comprises two catalytically active components (A, B) alloyed with one another and/or in the electrode, a carbon carrier, and pore-forming agents. The components are alloy, and are carried. The weight ratio of the metal portion between the components is 3:1 to 1:3. The electrode comprises ionomer of 30-50 wt.%. A first catalytically active metal and/or alloy as component (A) oxidizes ethanol and/or 3-10 carbon-containing alcohol to acetaldehyde and/or 3-10 carbon-containing aldehyde. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The electrode useful as anode in a membrane-electrode-unit for direct ethanol fuel cell, comprises two catalytically active components (A, B) alloyed with one another and/or in the electrode, a carbon carrier, and pore-forming agents. A second catalytically active metal and/or alloy as the component (B) oxidizes acetaldehyde, 3-10 carbon-containing aldehyde, acetic acid and/or 2-9 carbon-containing carboxylic acid to carbon dioxide. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) production of electrode; and (2) production of membrane-electrode-unit. USE - Electrode useful as anode in a membrane-electrode-unit for direct ethanol fuel cell (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The electrode ensures higher power densities to the membrane-electrode-unit.
