Abstract
The service sector is no less innovative than the manufacturing sector, but in rather different way. Hence the recent surge in research activities attempting to define the differences between those two sectors, explore ways of improving the innovation capacity of service providers, and assess the impact of such measures not only on the competitiveness of the service sector but also on the entire economy. A brief introduction to this subject is provided on the next few pages. This is followed by a summary of the views expressed by the panel of experts participating in the MARS project concerning the developments and issues of greatest importance to service innovation. To conclude, we provide a selective list of challenges representing the areas of service research requiring the most attention in the coming years.
