Abstract

DE 102006032759 A1 UPAB: 20080504 NOVELTY - A method for the production of stable suspensions (I) of colloidal particles of crystalline zirconium dioxide, involves the hydrothermal treatment of aqueous, molecularly-dispersed sol-gel solutions (II) made from amorphous, water-soluble precursor powders (III). DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for stable suspensions (I) obtained by this method. USE - For the production of thin, transparent, crystalline coatings on a substrate, preferably glass, ceramic, metal, plastic or a heat-sensitive substrate, for the incorporation of zirconium dioxide particles into materials, for the production of porous zirconium dioxide layers as catalysts or catalyst supports, for the non-damaging coating of ceramic fibers, and for the production of porous zirconium dioxide layers as self-cleaning and/or dirt-repelling coatings (claimed). Other applications include the production of antibacterial coatings (e.g. in air conditioner systems) and addition to plastics in order to increase the refractive index. ADVANTAGE - Overcomes the disadvantages of prior-art methods, e.g. amorphous precursors resulting in amorphous coatings with poor optical quality and with micro-sized cracks rather than a definite pore structure. In particular, the use of these suspensions enables the production of thin, transparent, crystalline layers with a large surface area, high porosity and high abrasion resistance on substrates such as glass, ceramics and metal.
