Abstract
It is a short-term study to examine the use of natural gas and fuel oil in the German Iron and Steel Industry (old boundaries of the Federal Republic). The primary goal was to investigate the use of natural gas. Fuel oil was only of interest in those cases where it is used in large quantities. The study looks at the present situation for natural gas use, analyzes statistics from the last 5 - 10 years and will attempt to make predictions about the consumption for the next few years. The following questions will be answered: 1. For which specific processes is the use of natural gas (and of fuel oil) relevant? 2. Which factors affect the choice of the energy source (technical feasibility, economic considerations and environmental regulations)? 3. To what extent are the energy sources interchangeable (between gas and oil as well as other sources such as coal) and what role has this interchangeability played in the past?
