The key barriers in the potential commercialization of the large-scale SOFC systems are their durability and reliability when operating under harsh conditions relevant for the real application case. Recent material developments resulted in significant improvement of the operating lifetime and accessibility of the SOFC systems. Howeverm the harsh operating conditions (e.g. operation under carbon-containing or highly humidfied fuels) can still induce undesired degradation, which irreversibly deteriorate the electrochemical cell performance alternations must be ensured at the early stage. Solving the engineering challenges of the system longevity by employing appropriate online-monitoring diagnostic tools seems to be the key for the reliable operation. Degradation and ageing mechanisms predictions as well as proper diagnosis approaches, which act in a time-efficient manner, are thus the focus of the present study. The identification of harsh conditions enables to design appropriate countermeasures and extend the expected system lifetime.
