More individualized products challenge rigidly linked assembly lines. Higher changeability is expected from so-called matrix assembly structures to cope with high product variants. To provide the needed degree of changeability, options of changes have to be considered during the design phase of the system. Since matrix assembly structures are complex, it is difficult to find the best way to provide the needed changeability. To identify changeable elements, functions and relations of a matrix assembly system, this paper uses an approach based on the system theory. Subsequently, options of changes are derived and presented.
