Abstract
To make assembly processes transparent, there is a need to track the present-day events. These processes are not standardized and can vary a lot, therefore they are poorly and/or partly documented. Tracking assembly processes manually is costly and only possible for processes with a specific duration. There are new approaches to collect data of processes via human activity recognition, but it is implied that they violate the worker’s privacy. Other available products in the market also show disadvantages in certain requirements. This paper is focused on creating a device (“thing” in the context of the Industrial Internet of Things), which is attached to a tool or component involved in the investigated assembly processes. This device has to meet certain requirements to ensure the non-interruption of value creation. Therefore, we combine consumer hardware with custom firmware and a framework to create a so-called “software-defined device”. We compare our results with other competing products regarding the set requirements.
