The integration of the volatile electric power generation from renewable energy sources into the electric grid will be one the main challenges of the 21st century. The scientific community agrees that different kinds of flexibility options (e.g. energy storage systems, demand side management programs, energy conversion) are necessary to allow a full integration of power generated by wind and sun. However, it is necessary to test these options before they are implemented into the grid. The collected experiences will be fundamental for improving their performance.
