Titel
Thermal Management of a Ka Band Satellite Communication Module Using Finite Element Models and Thermal Imaging
Abstract
High bandwith transmissions on moving platforms as plains or busses demand active antennas and necessitate systems with high energy densities. A thermal management solution for a Ka band high gain steerable antenna has been developed to meet the thermal requirements. Modelling and thermal measurement have been used to support the design process at all stages. Different concepts have been developed and all parts of the thermal path have been investigated - the board design as well as choice of TIM and heatsink have been evaluated by analytical and finite element modelling; infrared imaging of critical components, as power or driver amplifiers, has been used to characterize their thermal performance. On this basis, assembly technologies and thermal requirements for the heatsink could be determined.
