Prerequisites for the integration of strategic foresight with product development
Abstract

In recent years, strategic foresight has increasingly moved into the spotlight of scientists and practitioners. Although many companies have recognized that strategic foresight is a decisive competitive factor, it is often difficult for them to anchor strategic foresight permanently in the company and to integrate it into the functional units, processes and activities of the company. Especially in product development, strategy foresight is rarely used, although product development is confronted with numerous challenges due to the changing corporate environment. ln order to integrate strategy foresight into the development process permanently, on the one hand the development-specific requirements must be taken into account. On the other hand, the company and industry context, for example with regard to company size or innovation orientation, determines to large extent the use of foresight in the development process. A multi-level model is used to identify influencing factors in terms of prerequisites and framework conditions for integration. The theoretical reference of the model is formed by systems theory and systems engineering. Based on systems theory, the development process (socio-technical system), the company (supersystem) and the industry (environment) are considered as a coherent system. Influencing factors on all three system levels are described. Systems engineering specifies systems theory in the field of product development and is used to analyze development-specific influencing factors for the integration of foresight with the development process. Through a holistic view of influencing factors and through simultaneously differentiating influencing factors (e.g. in supportive and inhibiting framework conditions), the model creates a fundament for the integration of foresight in product development. lt shows which conditions are necessary for the application of foresight and when foresight is most relevant. Further, the model can be used to analyze a use case and to derive action options for the integration of foresight in product development.
