Abstract
Though there is a general agreement that gasification of biomass poses a very good option in substituting fossil resources e.g. for producing natural gas or chemicals, it still remains very difficult to establish biomass gasification on a large scale. This can also be contributed to the remaining issues concerning the gas cleaning in general and the removal of the so called tars in particular. Catalytic tar reforming is very promising especially when considering the overall efficiency when properly employed in the process. But the economic impact on the gasification in unclear. In this contribution it was shown that the application of catalytic tar removal can be cost effective even when expensive catalysts are used. Tests of different precious metal (PM) based catalysts in H2S containing synthetic syngas show good results for aromatic tar removal. Additionally, long-term tests were performed comparing the precious metal catalysts with a commercially available nickel based catalyst under space velocities, realistic for large scale systems. An economic assessment was conducted showing that the overall impact on tar removal is quite low for catalytic tar removal as well as for the oil based scrubbing technology OLGA.
