Abstract

A promising research approach for the significant reduction of abrasive and adhesive tool wear as well as for the reduction of the coefficient of friction during the forming of aluminum alloys are sufficiently smooth or smoothed CVD diamond coatings. By com-bining the CVD diamond deposition and injection molding processes, the otherwise necessary post-processing of the rough CVD diamond layer can be saved through clever process design. The most important advantage is that any 3D complex tool sur-faces can be provided with a smooth CVD diamond as wear protection layer without any major effort. The otherwise usual intermediate layers can be omitted. As a side ef-fect, the microform closure of the plastic melt with the rough growth side of the diamond surface results in a high adhesive strength of the diamond layer.
