Abstract

Several possibilities of bond reactions between monomers and polymers on the one side and wood on the other are discussed. For particleboard it was found that monomeric compounds with polyfunctional reactivity, especially hexamethylene diamine in combination with high molecular substances, such as polyvinylchloride, by hot pressing at 140°C led to wood bonds with high tensile strength perpendicular to the surface. Particleboard in the amine alkaline medium show relatively high tensile strength perpendicular to the surface (about 9 kp/cm²). The experimental data reveal that for attaining high strength properties not only the reactivity of the monomeric compound towards some wood components, especially lignin, is of basic importance, but also that towards the high molecular partner PVC. The addition of a small amount of microcristalline cellulose was found to have a positive influence on the strength properties of particle board prepared according to the above-mentioned method on the one hand and of particleboard with phenolic resins as binding agents on the other.
