Abstract
The design of electrochemical machining (ECM) processes for the finishing of high-strength materials with defined surface properties demands large amounts of time and resources. To improve time and resource efficiency, simulation-based design is substantially required. Accurate models of ECM processes, however, depend on precise input of the electrochemical material properties, which have to be obtained by consistent integration of information and data. This data, including material data, treatment conditions and microstructure, originates from previous process steps or characterization experiments. This study presents theoretical and experimental work, detailing the simulation-based design of microstructuring via Jet Electrochemical Machining (Jet-ECM). Required material data is obtained by characterization experiments and subsequently processed and integrated via developed interfaces into multiphysics simulation. The multiphysics simulation is used to describe the manufacturing process for surface microstructuring of high-strength materials like magnesium alloy WZ73.
