Abstract
Material science is a key technology for innovative companies since 70 % of all technological innovations are based on new materials and material technology. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) announced a new research programme called „Twenty20 – Partnership for Innovation“ in 2012. Universities, research institutes and industries were encouraged to form trans-disciplinary consortia defining prospective research fields in order to address relevant future challenges. It was the creation of the smart³-network focusing innovative and meaningful applications of smart materials. The network consists of engineers, designers and economists as well as material- and social scientists collaborating with small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). 67 % members of the smart³ association are SMEs, 10 % are big companies and around 20 % are scientific institutes like universities or applied research organisations (e. g. Fraunhofer Gesellschaft).This conference contribution provides an overview on different smart materials. Furthermore, we show how engineers and designers from universities and industries have cooperated in creating product concepts within the strategic categories smart production, smart mobility, smart health and smart living. Design models respective demonstrators will visualize the output of Research and Development projects. Several examples will be presented, such as bike frames, electric razors, and pneumatic valves. The smart³-innovation network comprises a radical change of paradigms in product development by implementing smart material functions directly into the component structure. Instead of separating the function from the structure the integration of the functionality will already be achieved on the material level. Additionally, the presentation shows how a cross-disciplinary network with rapidly growing membership can successfully be built up and managed. The smart³ association consists meanwhile of 140 institutions to pool forces in the field of smart material applications. The association is organized by the smart³ Project House that is financed by all members depending on the use of services. Besides ist innovative contribution to product and production technology, the smart³-network organizes educational training programmes for different age groups and academic levels. For professional training and further education purposes for example, an experimental suitcase was developed containing semi-finished installations of smart materials and control equipment inclusive. Smart material experts went into high schools, universities, maker spaces and SMEs to introduce smart materials to developer and user with the aim to foster sustainable manufacturing processes. Last but not least, the concept of a material collection extends the existing material libraries by using the serendipity approach to combine experiments with digital knowledge resources. Several competitions were launched to achieve capable demonstrators and even art objects with a highly degree of didactic properties.
